Human Resource job - office site map

Oops, why is HR job work in a UX design portfolio?

Let me tell you…

In 2021 accepted an interim position in HR for MedGenome. I was hired as an Office assistant/HR.

When I took up this job I was anxious. So far in my life I had only used the creative side of my brain in creative fields. And being dyslexic I thought this job would be impossible… but, I took a leap of faith. I am grateful to them for taking me on board with an open mind. I was given total freedom to set my system in place.

I took up this job with passion as I do with all of the problem solving in my life. Be it raising children or any creative projects.

By nature I like to help and creatively problem solve. Approaching this HR position with that in mind, it was no longer daunting. I started to problem solve and helped new hires to feel welcomed and comfortable. And on the side learnt Trinet and Quickbooks in a week. Started doing payroll, accounting, and onboarding new hires (and off boarding). I learnt and performed all these duties. But I soon realized that the office did not have a system for designating jobs clearly.

So, I came up with an office site map (see below). Now after completing my Google UX design certificated course, I feel the system which I came up with had many parallels to UX design flow.

In short, let me conclude with this. I felt like an imposter in my HR job when I began, however, that job made me more confident in my creative thinking and problem solving. It showed me that anything can be learnt at any time in one’s life. All you need is the willingness to learn. I feel now that I am more than ready to take on any UX challenge and continue with my exploration and learning journey.
